How Do I Stop My Dog From Jumping On People?

Mar 12, 2018

Most dogs jump on guests because they want attention, or because they are excited about meeting new people or having new people in the house. When you give in to your dog’s excitement by allowing it to jump, you are only making the problem worse. Here are some tips on how to get your dog to stop jumping:

1. Don’t get excited when you walk through the door. Act calm and normal as you walk into your home. If you must, ignore your dog completely until they calm down. Then you may calmly greet them.

2. Have guests gently push the dog off of them, and completely ignore the dog otherwise. Once the dog realizes it’s not getting attention, it will calm down and go relax somewhere. If your guest then wants to interact with the dog, encourage it.

3. Make sure everyone in the house is following the rules. Don’t allow the dog to jump up on anyone for attention

4. Exercise your dog. Dogs that are already drained of their energy are far less likely to become excited and jump around or onto people.

5. If your dog is still jumping, try waiting until your dog has calmed down, then offer it a treat. The dog will associate jumping with being ignored, and treats and love with sitting quietly.
