9 Wacky House Cleaning Tips For Living With German Shepherds
If you have a German shepherd, you already know they shed a lot. They’re also masters at nose art and have the amazing ability to quickly make messes. But even though you’ll spend a lot of time cleaning up after them, they’re worth the effort.
People are always asking for our best housecleaning tips when living with German shepherds so here they are:
1. Give up, your house is a mess
German shepherds’ aka “German shedders” shed a lot of fur year-round. Their fur is nearly impossible to keep up with so you might as well give in and learn to live with it on your floor, furniture, clothing, bed, and even inside your refrigerator.
Then there is that special time of year when they blow their coat. During those times, you can weave an extra dog out of the explosion of fur that will take over your house like wild tumbleweeds caught in a desert wind. There’s nothing you can do that you can do to contain or hide it so don’t even stress trying.
2. Forget about inviting your friends over after you clean the house
Face it, you can’t keep up with their disgusting messes, so you’ll never be done cleaning the house. The only thing you can do is swallow your pride and allow your friends to see how you really live or never have people over. Your true friends will embrace the fluff with you.
3. The forever excuse to stay home
Owning a German shepherd is a handy excuse to get out of just about any invitation. Want to skip the wedding? Just say you have to stay home and clean up after your shepherds (anyone whose seen your house will understand). Feel like staying home to nurse a pint of ice cream rather than go to the movies? Sorry friend, my dog just did that thing again…you get the picture.
4. Budget for cleaning supplies
Some people spend all their extra money on tattoos or shoes but not you. You spend yours on new vacuums, mops, brooms, cleaning supplies, and the latest gadgets that promise to help make your cleaning life easier but never really deliver because nothing can stay on top of the mess you live in.
5. Let go of your dream of a sparkling home
You might as well let your dream of a sparkling clean house go. Short of hiring a housekeeper to follow your dog around day and night, there will always be an endless trail of fur, water droplets, toys, bits of food, slobber, and whatever else your German shepherd manages to collect throughout their day.
6. How to have shiny hard floors
Is that a joke? You can’t keep your hard floors shiny. Your wood, laminate, and tile will always be covered in a fur haze, dusty paw prints, and dribbles of water and drool trailing around the house.
7. Keep your bed fur-free
Even if your dog isn’t allowed on the bed, somehow their fur will get on and in it no matter how hard you try to prevent it. The best way to handle this is to buy a bed cover and then learn to enjoy sleeping with their fur tickling your nose and toes.
8. How to keep your furniture clean
If you’re determined to keep the fur off your furniture, the best way to do this is to keep it covered in plastic. Then, once a week take it outside and blow it off with the leaf blower. Your comfort when sitting on the couch is a small price to pay for all the time you’ll save by trying to vacuum it.
9. Vacuum like a fanatic
You’ll have to vacuum like a fanatic to stay on top of the fur. Forget about a sissy vacuum, you’ll need a heavy-duty one for this job. And, since German shepherds can out shed the best vacuum cleaner, you might as well get used to fur stuck in every crevice, too.
Even though these tips are meant to be funny, they’re also true. Living with German shepherds can get messy and it’s better to embrace that fact rather than to stress out about it all the time.
