Sizing guide

How to size your dog for a prong collar?

Instructions:

  1. Choose the wire gauge according to your dog’s weight. (See below)
  2. Size your dog’s neck and add 2 inches. (Example: Dog’s neck = 10” + 2”. Your dog’s prong collar size is at least 12”)  Note: Collars should sit higher up on the neck, so measure here when determining collar size.
  3. If collar length needs to be adjusted, add or remove links accordingly.

Wire Gauge According to Weight:

2.25 mm  – up to 66 lbs

3.2 mm – up to 88 lbs

4.0 mm – up to 154 lbs

How to Correctly Measure Your Dog’s Neck:

To select the most accurate size collar for your dog, measure the center of their neck with a cloth tape measure, a few inches down from their head. The collar should sit high up on your dog's neck, just behind their ears. Pull the cloth tape measure snug, but not tight. The fit should be snug, so the prong links can't shift to the front of your dog's neck where they might pinch your dog's trachea. Make sure there's enough room for about two fingers between the collar and your pet's neck for comfort. If the dog happens to be in between sizes it's then recommended to select the bigger size. NOTE: The collar should not be able to slip over your dog’s head.

How to Measure for a Dog Collar?

To measure your dog for a collar, use a soft measuring tape and wrap it around your dog’s neck where the collar would naturally sit. Pull the tape snug, but not tight—you should be able to comfortably fit two fingers between the tape and your dog’s neck. Once you have the measurement, add 1 to 2 inches for comfort.

For example, if your dog’s neck measures 16 inches, look for a collar that fits 15 to 19 inches. It's best to choose a size where your dog’s neck measurement falls in the middle of the range.

This is a standard sizing guide. Individual products may vary slightly.

How to Measure for a Dog Harness?

To measure for a harness, start by measuring the chest girth at the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind the front legs. Then, measure the neck girth at the lower part of the neck where a harness would rest—it should be lower than where a collar sits. Make sure both measurements fall within the sizing range listed for the harness you’re considering.

Once the harness is on, you should be able to comfortably slide two fingers between the straps and your dog’s body. The fit should be snug, but not tight. If your dog falls between sizes, always look for a harness with adjustable straps to ensure the best fit.

This is a standard sizing guide. Individual products may vary slightly.

How to Measure for a Dog Muzzle?

How to Measure:

  1. Snout Circumference: Measure around your dog’s snout, about ½ inch below the eyes.

  2. Snout Length: Measure from the tip of the nose to the point just below the eyes (where the muzzle should end).

Fit Check:

  • The muzzle should be secure but allow the dog to pant, drink water, and take treats, if needed.

  • It shouldn’t press into the skin or restrict normal breathing.

Tip: Some muzzles are breed-specific. Double-check the sizing chart if available.

Product Information

What materials are used in durable tugs and bite sleeves?

Professional-grade tugs and bite sleeves are typically made from natural, dog-safe fabrics like jute, French linen, and leather. Each material has its own strengths:

  • is a tightly woven natural fiber prized for its strength and bite resistance. It offers high durability and encourages a strong grip, while still being kind to your dog’s teeth. It’s often used in protective gear that needs to withstand repeated heavy use

  • is slightly lighter than jute but still very tough. It’s ideal for puppy sleeves and introductory bite work because it’s less intimidating to dogs building their bite foundation. Over time it wears well, especially when transitioning to stronger materials

  • is commonly used in tug toys (not in bite sleeves) due to its pliability and ability to absorb shock. Leather tugs are durable and resilient, though jute and linen are generally preferred for bite sleeves. Leather can be used safely for interactive play but is not recommended for heavy bite work

While synthetic materials (fire hose, nylon, ballistic fabrics) exist and may offer durability, many trainers prefer the balance of strength and comfort that jute and French linen provide. These natural fibers are non-toxic, do not damage teeth, and offer consistent performance during training.

✅ TL;DR:

  • strongest, most durable, ideal for heavy-duty bite work.

  • lightweight but strong, great for puppies and beginners.

soft, shock-absorbing tug material—not used in bite sleeves.

What’s the difference between the metals used in Herm Sprenger collars?

Herm Sprenger collars are made from a range of high-quality metals, each offering unique benefits.

Chrome-plated steel is a budget-friendly option that resists rust and has a shiny finish—great for short-haired dogs and light use.

Black stainless steel offers a sleek, modern look with strong corrosion resistance, though the black coating may gradually wear.

Silver stainless steel is highly resistant to rust and is ideal for all coat types, especially for dogs that swim or live in humid environments.

Curogan, a copper-tin alloy, is completely nickel-free and a great choice for dogs with skin sensitivities or fur discoloration.

To explore our full Herm Sprenger collection, visit Herm Sprenger Collars.

Do you carry indestructible toys?

Yes! We carry some of the toughest toys available, including Ruff Dawg and Goughnuts, which are built for extreme chewers. While no toy is truly indestructible, these are designed for maximum durability and are backed by manufacturer guarantees. Be sure to choose the appropriate size and strength for your dog, and always supervise play.

What’s the difference between leather and Biothane?

Leather is a natural material made from animal hide. It's known for its durability, classic appearance, and the way it softens and ages over time. Biothane, on the other hand, is a synthetic material made of a polyester webbing coated in TPU or PVC. It’s waterproof, odor-resistant, and easy to clean, making it great for dogs that get dirty or wet often. While leather offers a traditional look and feel, Biothane provides more weather resistance and requires less maintenance.

Which Herm Sprenger prong collar is best for saltwater use?

If you and your dog spend time near the ocean or in salty environments, we recommend the Herm Sprenger Stainless Steel prong collar.

✅ It is highly resistant to rust and corrosion, even in saltwater

✅ Ideal for active dogs near the beach or in humid climates

Avoid using chrome-plated collars in salty or wet environments, as they are more likely to rust over time.
