How to size for a prong collar

Instructions:

  1. Choose the wire gauge according to your dog’s weight. (See below)
  2. Size your dog’s neck and add 2 inches. (Example: Dog’s neck = 10” + 2”. Your dog’s prong collar size is at least 12”)  Note: Collars should sit higher up on the neck, so measure here when determining collar size.
  3. If collar length needs to be adjusted, add or remove links accordingly.

Wire Gauge According to Weight:

2.25 mm  – up to 66 lbs

3.2 mm – up to 88 lbs

4.0 mm – up to 154 lbs

How to Correctly Measure Your Dog’s Neck:

To select the most accurate size collar for your dog, measure the center of their neck with a cloth tape measure, a few inches down from their head. The collar should sit high up on your dog's neck, just behind their ears. Pull the cloth tape measure snug, but not tight. The fit should be snug, so the prong links can't shift to the front of your dog's neck where they might pinch your dog's trachea. Make sure there's enough room for about two fingers between the collar and your pet's neck for comfort. If the dog happens to be in between sizes it's then recommended to select the bigger size. NOTE: The collar should not be able to slip over your dog’s head.

FAQS

What’s the difference between the metals used in Herm Sprenger collars?

Herm Sprenger collars are made from a range of high-quality metals, each offering unique benefits.

Chrome-plated steel is a budget-friendly option that resists rust and has a shiny finish—great for short-haired dogs and light use.

Black stainless steel offers a sleek, modern look with strong corrosion resistance, though the black coating may gradually wear.

Silver stainless steel is highly resistant to rust and is ideal for all coat types, especially for dogs that swim or live in humid environments.

Curogan, a copper-tin alloy, is completely nickel-free and a great choice for dogs with skin sensitivities or fur discoloration.

What does the ClicLock buckle do?

The ClicLock converts your Herm Sprenger prong collar into a convenient quick-release version, eliminating the need to open and close links each time. It installs easily with no tools, maintains the collar’s full functionality and authentic look, and is available in sizes designed to fit 2.25 mm, 3.0/3.2 mm, and 4.0 mm Herm Sprenger collars.

What’s the difference between a prong collar with a swivel and one with an O-ring?

  • With swivel: The clip can spin, so your leash won’t twist up when the dog moves around. Smoother handling.
  • With O-ring: The clip is fixed, so the leash can twist if the dog pulls or turns. Simpler, but less smooth.

👉 If your dog is strong or active, go with the swivel.

👉 If your dog is calmer, the O-ring works fine.

What’s the difference between the Quick Lock Release Prong Collar and the Regular Martingale Prong Collar?

Both collars use prong links to give correction, but they differ in design and function:

  • Quick Lock Release Prong Collar: This collar has a built-in quick-release buckle that makes it very easy to put on and take off. It’s convenient for handlers who need to remove the collar quickly during training or when working with multiple dogs. However, because it doesn’t use a martingale chain, the correction is typically lighter and less firm.
  • Regular Martingale Prong Collar: This collar works with a martingale-style chain loop, which allows it to tighten slightly when the dog pulls. That tightening action gives a stronger and more precise correction, making it more effective for dogs that need firmer guidance. It takes a little longer to put on and take off compared to the quick-release version.

👉 Best of both worlds: You can add a quick-release buckle to a regular Martingale Prong Collar. This way, you still get the better correction of the martingale design, but with the convenience of easy on/off.

Which Herm Sprenger prong collar is best for saltwater use?

If you and your dog spend time near the ocean or in salty environments, we recommend the Herm Sprenger Stainless Steel prong collar.

✅ It is highly resistant to rust and corrosion, even in saltwater

✅ Ideal for active dogs near the beach or in humid climates

Avoid using chrome-plated collars in salty or wet environments, as they are more likely to rust over time.

What does the Prong Collar Backup Safety Connector do?

The Biothane Backup Safety Connector provides an extra layer of security to help prevent your dog from getting loose if a prong collar comes undone. Simply clip one end to your dog’s regular flat collar and the other to the leash snap hook. It can also be used with a harness for added safety. Made from durable, all-weather Biothane with stainless steel hardware, it resists odors, wipes clean easily, and is built for reliable everyday use.

Can I make the collar smaller or bigger?

Yes. Herm Sprenger prong collars are fully adjustable by adding or removing individual links to achieve the proper fit. We offer replacement links sold individually or in convenient 3-packs to help you fine-tune your collar size.

How do I put the prong collar on my dog?

If your collar is equipped with a quick-release (such as the ClicLock), simply open the buckle, place the collar high on your dog’s neck behind the ears, and close it securely. If your collar does not have a quick-release, pinch a prong link to open the collar, position it correctly, and reattach the link. Never slide a prong collar over your dog’s head, as this can cause injury and lead to an improper fit.

How tight should a prong collar be and where should it sit?

A prong collar should sit high on your dog’s neck, directly behind the ears, and fit snugly without being tight. You should be able to fit about two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck. The collar should not hang low, rotate freely, or slide down the neck.
